Although mostly ignored or undiagnosed, on an average about 1 % of all people in America, who are aged around 18 or above are victims of Bipolar mood swing. It is characterized by sudden yet prolonged episodes of intense shifting of mood. Not only mood, disturbances are seen in the thought level, energy level and functioning capabilities of the person also. Usually the person experiences rapid and recurrent instances of high, elevated mood and energy as in mania; and a deep down feeling with frustration and isolation, as in depression, often with a brief gap period within. That is why; this syndrome is called bipolar, where two entirely different symptoms of mood swings are sported simultaneously. Usually, the effected person shows the signs and symptoms of the bipolar mood swing periodically, with a frequency of 0.4 to 0.7 times per year. Bipolar mood swing is prevalent in both men and woman. However, it is more prominent and reported in women, because bipolar mood swing is often associated with hormonal changes, which is more profound in case of women, than men. Although it occurs at the age of 18 or so, yet cases where children were affected have also been reported. This dual faced psychological disorderÂ's signs and symptoms are confusing to categorize and describe. That is why it is described in terms of bipolar spectrum, where the symptoms tend to occur in a recurrent and differential manner. Bipolar mood swing causes a person to feel persistent depression Â'bluesÂ' like sadness, guilt, isolation; followed by a sober, steady and normal stage; then comes a brief hypomania stage, where the person feels impulsive and uncontrolled laughing tendency unnecessarily, and becomes increasingly witty and clever; after that there is the state of mania, which is prolonged but shows characteristic signs of high, elevated and disillusioned thinking as in hallucination. Also psychosis is often associated with bipolar mood swings, where the person imagines about things that are not related to reality. Sometimes the person experiences simultaneous feelings of symptoms of depression and mania like - irritability, anxiety, confusion, impulsiveness, and sleep disorders and in extreme cases, suicidal tendencies and paranoia too. The victims of bipolar mood swings often exhibit intentions of suicide, self mutilation, adultery and drug abuse etc., which is why it is very important to detect the symptoms at an early stage and work on it. If it goes undetected, it might result in serious impairment of the patientÂ's mental health. |
